  •  Scarlett Johansson addressed rumors of Black Widow's return in an upcoming MCU project, stating she had no awareness of any plans. She joked it would have to be a "zombie film."
  •  Johansson confirmed that Black Widow is dead after sacrificing herself in Avengers: Endgame to get the Soul Stone on Vormir.
  •  While acknowledging that Marvel always finds a way, Johansson expressed uncertainty about how Black Widow could come back from her death and suggested it would be a Marvel miracle.

Scarlett Johansson has responded to rumors that Black Widow and the original six Avengers could return for an upcoming MCU project.

A few weeks ago, a report from Variety about the current state of the MCU suggested that the studio discussed bringing back the original Avengers. While members of this group are still active within the universe, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers, and Natasha Romanoff are either dead or retired.

In an interview with Today this morning, Johansson addressed these rumors when asked about them by host Savannah Guthrie. Johansson had no awareness of any plans to bring her back and joked that if she were to return, it would have to be a "zombie film." She also confirmed Black Widow is dead after sacrificing herself on Vormir to get the Soul Stone in Avengers: Endgame.

Guthrie: I don't know, but you know - Marvel, they always find a way. Can you confirm or deny anything about this?

Johansson: I think it might be... I think it was the end, right? I don't know how you come back from that.

Guthrie: Did she die?

Guthrie: I just want to be clear - I'm not going to force it, but this is not a response to the question of whether she's reviving back to life.

Johansson: I would have... it would be a miracle. It would be real Marvel miracle. It would be a marvel. But, you know, who knows? Eh... I'm not sure.

Despite three of the original Avengers members being out of the MCU, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Marvel could bring the original Avengers back. Now that the multiverse exists, anyone can return, and Marvel could bring the original six back for Avengers: Secret Wars.

However, despite rumors, it doesn't seem there are current plans to bring this team back. Kevin Feige quickly debunked this rumor while speaking to Entertainment Tonight at The Marvels premiere, saying "We did not discuss [bringing back Scarlett Johansson and Robert Downey Jr.] at the retreat."

Feige is adamant that there are no plans to bring this team back, but Marvel Studios does have a confirmed "project" with Johansson in the works. What form that takes, however, is unknown, and it seems likely it won't involve her suiting up as Black Widow.

Bringing back the original crew would not only temper any momentum the MCU has with its new characters but also remind audiences of when the MCU was in a more stable position. As great as it would be to see them again, the MCU needs to focus on building its new cast of heroes, rather than reverting to the past.
