Missing in Action: Hailee Steinfeld's Absence in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts Stirs Controversy

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts has a call back to Hailee Steinfeld's character from Bumblebee, making her absence in the movie even worse.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts makes Hailee Steinfeld's absence even worse. Having been the primary human protagonist in 2018's Bumblebee, it was already odd that her role wasn't continuing prior to Rise of the Beasts' release. However, the events of the movie itself and a reference to Steinfeld's character double down on how unfortunate it is that she's missing from the new movie.

2018's Bumblebee from director Travis Knight is set in 1987, a Transformers prequel that shows the titular Autobot's first adventures with humans before Optimus Prime and the other Autobots arrive on Earth from their dying world of Cybertron. Steven Caple Jr.'s Rise of the Beasts is set 7 years later in 1994, and together these films have effectively soft-rebooted the Transformers franchise.

While they're still part of the same timeline as the first five films directed by Michael Bay, a new era of canon has been created. Keeping that in mind, Rise of the Beasts proves that Hailee Steinfeld's Charlie Watson should have had a role, especially considering Bumblebee's fate.

Bumblebee’s Memories Of Charlie Are A Sad Reminder She Doesn’t Return

Rise of the Beasts confirms that the Autobots have been stranded on Earth for 7 years with no way of returning home to Cybertron. During this time, Optimus Prime has been deeply distrusting of humanity, mandating that his fellow Autobots stay hidden at all times.

However, the need to trust the human Noah Diaz (Anthony Ramos) sees Bumblebee and Optimus referencing the "human who once showed kindness" to Bumblebee. This human is of course Hailee Steinfeld's Charlie who helped Bumblebee during his first days on Earth as he was being hunted by both Decepticons and Sector 7.

Clearly, Bumblebee still has a fondness for Charlie and misses her, making her absence in Rise of the Beasts even stranger. After all, Hailee Steinfeld is a major Hollywood actress who would be perfect as a new franchise lead just like Shia LaBeouf's Sam Witwicky and Mark Wahlberg's Cade Yeager were in the Michael Bay films.

Instead, it looks as though the new era of the Transformers franchise is pivoting with Anthony Ramos' Noah Diaz who will likely help bridge the gap for Paramount and Hasbro's teased Transformers and G.I. Joe crossover.

Hailee Steinfeld’s Return Would Have Made Bumblebee’s Death More Emotional

If Steinfeld's absence in Rise of the Beasts wasn't sad enough, it's obvious that Bumblebee's death would have been far more emotional had she been there to witness his demise. Regardless of his resurrection in the movie's third act, the loss would have made a much bigger impact. Likewise, there was plenty of room for Steinfeld as well, seeing as how Rise of the Beasts only had two leading human actors with Ramos' Noah Diaz and Dominique Fishback as Elena Wallace.

Noah was primarily connected with the Autobot Mirage while Elena had a connection to the Maximal Airazor. Ignoring the 7-year time jump (which isn't much of an obstacle), Hailee Steinfeld's Charlie could have easily been there to grieve the loss of Bumblebee while also being overjoyed by his return in the film's third act. All things considered, It would have certainly made the arc even stronger in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Here's hoping Steinfeld returns in a sequel to Rise of the Beasts.
