While Young Sheldon season 7 has to follow through on many subplots, The Big Bang Theory renders one of these storylines completely pointless.
SUMMARY
- Young Sheldon season 7's subplot of Georgie and Mandy's relationship is doomed from the start because they want different things and will eventually get divorced, as established in The Big Bang Theory.
- Dragging out their will-they-or-won't-they dynamic in Young Sheldon doesn't make sense when their fate is already set, making this storyline ultimately pointless and potentially dark.
- The Big Bang Theory worsens this problem by already establishing Georgie's future divorce, rendering Young Sheldon season 7's exploration of their relationship a waste of screen time.
While Young Sheldon season 7 has a lot of subplots that the show needs to wrap up, The Big Bang Theory’s canon guarantees that one of these storylines is a waste of time. Young Sheldon’s storylines are not always entirely limited by the canon of The Big Bang Theory. Like any sitcom spinoff, Young Sheldon can change the plot details of its predecessor a little without upsetting too many viewers. For example, Sheldon’s father was characterized as a thoughtless, philandering drunk in The Big Bang Theory but in Young Sheldon, he is portrayed as a likable everyman with a few flaws.
However, Young Sheldon season 7 is likely to stretch the show’s ability to alter its source material to its breaking point. Sheldon is reaching the age that he was when his father died, and he still hasn’t been traumatized by walking in on George Sr. while he was engaged in an extra-marital tryst. Both of these events have a huge impact on Sheldon’s character, but it is not clear how Young Sheldon will handle either of them given the show’s light tone and its sweeter version of Sheldon’s father. Similarly, Georgie and Mandy’s engagement is canonically guaranteed to go nowhere, but Young Sheldon season 7 must still center this subplot.
Georgie & Mandy’s Young Sheldon Relationship Can’t Work
Georgie and Mandy want fundamentally different things and have since before Mandy became pregnant. Whether it was her repeatedly turning down his proposals or him rejecting her desire to return to work, the incompatible pair’s courtship is doomed. The Big Bang Theory’s spinoff has focused on Georgie since Young Sheldon’s lone Halloween episode, but it is tough to see how the show could make this plot line work when viewers already know how the couple's eventual marriage works out. In The Big Bang Theory, Georgie’s “ex-wife" is referenced enough times for viewers to reasonably assume that Mandy is that former partner.
Since Georgie and Mandy already have a child together, the pair will always remain a part of each other’s lives. However, Young Sheldon dragging out their will-they-or-won’t-they relationship dynamic doesn’t make sense when the duo are guaranteed to end up apart. When Mandy repeatedly asked Georgie to stop pursuing her romantically throughout Young Sheldon season 6, this came across as less of a cutesy rom-com convention and more of a sad window into their future. While many of the sitcoms that influenced Young Sheldon had poignant and even tragic episodes, the fact that Georgie and Mandy’s fate is set in stone makes this storyline way too dark.
The Big Bang Theory Makes This Problem Worse
Viewers know that Georgie and Mandy get divorced, meaning Young Sheldon season 7 is wasting screen time on a subplot that has a predestined ending. The Big Bang Theory set this story detail in stone when the earlier show referred to Georgie’s ex-wife, and Young Sheldon season 6 largely ignored this when the show saw the duo get engaged after a lengthy, inconsistent courtship. Georgie and Mandy sometimes seem like they might be able to make their unconventional pairing work, but thanks to The Big Bang Theory’s existing storyline, viewers already know that this Young Sheldon season 7 subplot is going nowhere.
