Dwayne Johnson is a popular choice among fans to play Kratos in the God of War show, but Cory Barlog spells bad news for the hopeful. Who is playing Kratos then? We go over 3 other fan-favorites for the role.
Fans speculated Dwayne Johnson may be the face of the upcoming God of War TV show, but game director Cory Barlog suggested otherwise.
Barlog "literally never heard" of Johnson being under consideration for the role.
Actors like Jason Momoa, Christopher Judge, and David Bautista are among the front-runners for the role in fan conversation.
The multi-million-selling God of War franchise changed the gaming landscape thanks to 2018’s reboot. It set a definitive benchmark for storytelling in the industry and went on to sell over 37 million units across PS4, PS5, and PC. After setting the gaming business on fire, God of War is set to do the same to the entertainment business.
In late 2022, Sony confirmed that a God of War TV series is in development at Amazon Prime Video. Almost immediately, fans started to speculate who should play the iconic bald and muscular protagonist, Kratos.
With those criteria in mind, one actor’s name kept coming up repeatedly – Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson – with many assuming he was already cast. However, that couldn’t be further from the truth.
What God of War’s Game Director Said About Dwayne
When rumors were swirling about who would play Kratos, one fan tweeted that the directors for the show were “strongly considering” Dwayne Johnson for the role, as per TMZ.
The tweet got 40,000 likes and was viewed by 21.2 million people. Many were disappointed at the decision, with some sarcastically suggesting Tom Holland for the role of Atreus to joke about how overused some A-list celebrities are.
The tweet eventually caught the attention of the director of 2018’s God of War, Cory Barlog, who immediately dispelled the uncredited rumor by replying “I have literally never heard anything about this”.
That’s not to say Dwayne Johnson isn’t in consideration for the role, but with Cory’s comment, it’s safe to assume he won’t be playing Kratos. However, several other actors have been in fan conversation for the role, and here are some of the best ones.
The Aquaman and Fast and Furious star has gained favourability among fans for playing Kratos, owing to his muscular build and glorious beard. Even though he’s mostly starred in mostly action and superhero movies, Momoa has proven he has excellent acting chops. The stoic yet deeply emotional role of Kratos could also be the award-winning performance he desires.
As the voice actor and motion capture artist for Kratos in God of War (2018) and God of War: Ragnarök, several fans consider Judge the obvious choice for the role. And it does make a lot of sense.
In addition to perfectly matching Kratos’ gruff voice and subtle mannerisms from the game, Judge could also deliver a convincing live-action performance, thanks to his experience in Stargate, The Mentalist, and several other projects.
Dave Bautista
One of the few WWE wrestlers who made a name for himself in Hollywood, Dave Bautista is one of the hottest up-and-comers in the industry. He exhibited a tremendous level of talent in his role as Drax the Destroyer in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, and now that he’s done with the superhero behemoth, Bautista is free to pursue other projects. He’s already expressed an interest in playing more dramatic roles, and the role of Kratos exactly fits the bill. Not to mention, he definitely looks the part.
