"Harry Styles in Mean Girls? The Shocking Casting Revelation by Directors!"

Mean Girls directors Arturo Perez Jr. and Samantha Jayne wanted to cast pop star Harry Styles in the iconic role of Glen Coco.

The pair directed the recently released musical reimagining of the iconic early noughties flick, which stars Reneé Rapp, Angourie Rice, Auli'i Cravalho, Jaquel Spivey and Avantika.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Perez and Jayne revealed their unlikely dream casting for the role of 'Glen Coco' – a student who receives four candy canes in one of the film's most recognisable moments.

Continuing, Jayne said, "We were like Harry Styles could be Glen Coco!"

The co-director went on to explain how the film's actual delivery of the line 'You go, Glen Coco!' – which is straight down the lens of the camera, as if to the audience – came about.

"Then we were like, hold on, we love to break the fourth wall: What if we are all Glen Coco? So, after 20 years, we can all feel like Glen Coco."

Jayne also said, "There's certain comedy that that flew and was funny 20 years ago, that just doesn't fly today. We all knew that. But there are certain iconic lines where we would joke that there would be riots in the streets if it wasn't in there."

"Based on the Broadway musical (which will make its way to London later this year), it's a new interpretation of a familiar story that's been updated for the TikTok generation. Fear not though, it still remembers to please the original fans and doesn't make us feel (too) old," we wrote.

"Mean Girls succeeds as a smart and funny update of the 2004 movie, one sure to delight fans as well as introducing a whole new generation to the concept of fetch."
