The God of War franchise has significantly impacted the gaming industry, especially since the reboot released in 2018. In fact, 2023 was a big year for Sony and Santa Monica's latest entry in the reboot series, God of War Ragnarok, with the successful release of its free roguelite DLC, Valhalla. Valhalla pulls players back into the world of Ragnarok's Kratos, but with a twist on its gameplay and story. Now, it's time to consider what could be next for Kratos, Atreus, and the God of War franchise in 2024.

2024 isn't full of concrete plans for the God of War franchise, as much of the news surrounding it comes down to rumors and works in progress. However, Sony and Santa Monica are unlikely to let the year go by without releasing something, as fans continue waiting in anticipation for more from the franchise. Thankfully, it seems they may end up getting what they're asking for.

Two Rumored God of War Games Could Be Revealed in 2024

One of the biggest rumors tied to the God of War franchise is the possibility that there is a half-sequel currently in development. As a half-sequel, it would be similar to Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales, which acted as a sequel to Marvel's Spider-Man but starred Miles Morales rather than Peter Parker in its short runtime.

If there is a half-sequel being developed for the God of War franchise, it would make sense for the story to revolve around Atreus, as the end of God of War Ragnarok made it clear that Atreus and Kratos would be going their separate ways, at least for some time.

Players got a taste of what it's like to play as Atreus in God of War Ragnarok and his gameplay received a positive reaction from the community, so a half-sequel that revolves around Atreus would undoubtedly be welcomed by fans.

The half-sequel could see Atreus face off against Sindri, who blames Atreus and Kratos for the death of his brother, Brok. Additionally, if a half-sequel is in development and Atreus is the main character, it could set up the ability to swap between him and Kratos in the third mainline installment of the reboot series, similarly to Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

The Original God of War Trilogy Could Be Getting the Remake Treatment

While the God of War reboot has certainly captivated fans, many still prefer the hack-and-slash combat and dark, gritty nature of the original trilogy. Those fans will be thrilled to learn that the original God of War trilogy is rumored to be receiving a remake or remaster.

XboxEra Podcast's Nick Baker stated on Episode 191, "The 4th Annual Grubbsmas Shpeshaltacular," that a remaster of the original God of War trilogy might be in the works. However, it's unclear whether it's a full remake or simply being remastered for current-gen consoles.

The original God of War will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2025, so if a remake/remaster is happening, it may not be released until then. At the very least, fans can likely expect the rumor to be confirmed or denied sometime in 2024.

A God of War Live-Action Series Is in the Works

While the God of War series has been enveloped in rumors as of late, there is still plenty of confirmed news for fans to be excited about. Among those confirmations is the news that a live-action series based on God of War is currently being developed by Amazon and Sony for Amazon Prime Video. Announced in May 2022 during Sony Pictures' investor meeting, the live-action series will follow the story of Kratos sometime in the God of War timeline.

It's currently unclear whether the series will follow the narrative of the original trilogy, the reboot, or if it will tell an original story. It's also unconfirmed who will play the titular character himself, Kratos. Rumors of Dwayne Johnson have been debunked by Cory Barlog, director of the God of War video game.

It would make sense to cast Christopher Judge as Kratos, as his voice already fits the character perfectly, and he has acted in other shows such as the Stargate series. Whatever the show ends up looking like or who is cast for it, it's bound to be an exciting time for fans of the franchise, and it's possible it will make its way to Prime Video in 2024.

CMON Will Begin Crowdfunding for a God of War (2018) Board Game in 2024

Board game enthusiasts will be pleased to learn that CMON, developer of 2019's God of War: The Card Game has officially announced a role-playing board game based on the 2018 reboot. Not many details have been disclosed thus far, but the developer has already revealed two minis that will be used in the game. The board game is set to hit crowdfunding in 2024 ahead of CMON's plans for a 2025 release.

Will God of War Ragnarok Be Coming to PC in 2024?

One question God of War Ragnarok fans have been asking for some time now is whether the 2022 hit sequel to the 2018 reboot will receive a PC port. While it has yet to be confirmed by Sony and Santa Monica, it's entirely probable Ragnarok will eventually make it to PC; it's more a matter of when rather than if.

God of War (2018) was released on PC three years after it was released on the PlayStation 4. Fall 2025 would be three years for God of War Ragnarok, but PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst confirmed that fans could soon expect to see PlayStation games ported to PC within a year of their initial release, thanks to new technology.

This means that a PC port for Ragnarok could still come in 2024. The huge success of the game, which has arguably been greater than that of the first game, certainly behooves Sony and Santa Monica to release it on PC, but only time will tell.

2024 is likely to be a big year for the God of War franchise if the rumors turn out to be true. Nevertheless, fans already have plenty to look forward to in the upcoming Amazon live-action series, the role-playing board game, and even the possibility of another DLC being released for Ragnarok after the huge success of its Valhalla DLC, so they shouldn't expect the long-running franchise's legacy to end anytime soon.
