According to a gaming industry insider, the original God of War trilogy that was released on the PlayStation 2 and 3 could be getting a remastered release for modern systems. While modern PlayStation players may know Kratos from the 2018 God of War reboot and its Ragnarok sequel, these games wouldn't have been possible without the original God of War trilogy. Even almost two decades after the series was first established, the original trilogy remains an acclaimed series.
The original God of War trilogy chronicles Kratos' journey of revenge, where he pursues the original Greek God of War Ares, which consequently leads to a series of events that has him clashing off against various other gods in the Greek Pantheon. The first two games of this trilogy were released on PS2, while the third game was released on the PS3.
While the first two games were re-released on the PS3, the original God of War trilogy never got a fully realized remastered release, outside the third game receiving a remaster on PS4 in 2015. Fans hoping the first two games of this trilogy will be getting remasters might be getting their wish.
God of War pushed its nostalgia envelope as far as possible in the Valhalla DLC and such an effort could suggest classic remakes are on their way.
This rumor was shared on The Xbox Era podcast by Nick Baker, a reputable leaker and insider of the podcast. In Episode 191 of this podcast, he starts the segment of the rumor mill by saying he wasn't a big fan of the direction of the new God of War games compared to the originals. As such, he really wanted to go back to the series' original hack-and-slash direction, stating that he heard it might be happening. He specifically states that fans could be getting the original God of War trilogy remastered on PlayStation.
He then clarifies that he isn't sure when this God of War remastered trilogy will be released, mentioning that it could be set for 2024 or even a 2025 release. On top of that, Baker wasn't entirely sure about the scope of the remaster,
whether it would be a port of the PS3 remasters for the original game, or if it would be similar to a "more involved" remaster, similar in scope to games like Metroid Prime Remastered, which had new controls, graphical overhauls, and other tweaks. He considers the former possibility something he'd be "less excited" over, but states that he's heard that a remaster is in the cards.
When one of the hosts asks if there were only going to be remasters of the three mainline games, Baker mentions he was explicitly told it was a trilogy, which likely eliminates the Greek-era spin-off games like God of War Ascension.
If what Baker has said is true, this would give a lot of newer God of War fans a chance to try out the games that started off this franchise and compare the two eras of Kratos' journey. That said, this is only a rumor, and claims from insiders like Baker have been incorrect before. As such, this information should be taken with a grain of salt until more official information is revealed.
