We’re celebrating the tenth anniversary of WHEN CALLS THE HEART with some fun facts about the popular show.
It might surprise some fans to know that WHEN CALLS THE HEART was originally a movie. The 2013 movie starred Maggie Grace, Jean Smart and Stephen Amell, with Lori Loughlin playing Abigail in both the movie and the show.
WHEN CALLS THE HEART was initially meant to film in Colorado but switched locations to Vancouver after it “outgrew the state of Colorado’s film incentive program,” per the Denver Business Journal.
When it comes to the beloved characters on WHEN CALLS THE HEART, no one knows them better than the cast, which is why Daniel Lissing and Erin Krakow asked the showrunners if they could write Jack Thornton and Elizabeth Thatcher’s wedding vows.
“Erin and I had sat down together…and I talked to her about the potential of writing our own vows, as Jack and as Elizabeth,” Lissing told Entertainment Tonight. “So we took that to the producers and they were like,
‘Well, yeah, you guys know the characters better than anyone else does,’ and so we actually wrote our vows. I wrote Jack’s vows and she wrote Elizabeth’s, and there’s that connection there. You can feel the love between these two characters, and Erin and I, as actors and as friends, have a lot of love for each other, so we really had each other’s back through that whole scene.”
Stars Jack and Kristina Wagner also felt particularly connected to their characters, ex-spouses Bill and Nora Avery.
The pair played married couple Frisco Jones and Felicia Cummings on GENERAL HOSPITAL and were even married in real life, from 1993 to 2006.
“It was very frightening to work together again,” Jack said in a 2015 interview, explaining that, while they had been comfortable working together on GENERAL HOSPITAL, “these are new characters.”
“But we really worked through it and we have a great chemistry,” the actor concluded. As fans celebrate 10 years of WHEN CALLS THE HEART, they’re also looking forward to the upcoming eleventh season.
“I am beyond excited for season 10 of WHEN CALLS THE HEART to premiere,” said Erin Krakow, series star and executive producer. “This season is full of beautiful moments and exciting twists and turns. I can’t wait for the Hearties to see what we’ve created for them!”
She added, “I’m so thrilled, proud and grateful to Hallmark that the show has been renewed for season 11. We have so many more stories to tell. With our amazing cast, crew, and brilliant writers, there will be no shortage of romance and new adventures for the residents of Hope Valley!”
