The Sofía Vergara-led Netflix series Griselda shares many thematic similarities with the celebrated Narcos but still makes sure to tell its own story.
SUMMARY
- Griselda, the new Netflix crime series, is a perfect replacement for Narcos and has received critical acclaim.
- Sofia Vergara delivers a transformative performance as the real-life queenpin Griselda Blanco, showcasing her unprecedented rank in the Colombian cartel.
- Griselda maintains the stylistic and thematic similarities of Narcos, but focuses more acutely on its protagonist and differentiates itself from the Escobar-centric series.
The new Netflix crime series Griselda is the perfect replacement for the celebrated series Narcos, even three years after its successful spinoff Narcos: Mexico. The original Narcos series was one of the earliest popular original series on the giant streaming platform, premiering back in 2015 only two years after House of Cards and Orange is the New Black.
Narcos, which was created by Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro, and Chris Brancato, quickly earned critical acclaim and is still considered one of the greatest Netflix series ever made.
Griselda features Emmy Award nominee and Modern Family star Sofia Vergara in a transformative role as real-life queenpin Griselda Blanco, who was heavily involved in the Colombian cartel drug trade during the late 1970s and 1980s.
Naturally, this would draw obvious connections to another notable Colombian drug lord and leader of the Medellín cartel, Pablo Escobar. Known widely as "The Godmother of Cocaine" and "The Black Widow", Griselda's rank in the cartel was unprecedented and unrepeated, making her a truly one-of-a-kind figure as demonstrated in the new Netflix series.
Griselda is a standalone Netflix crime miniseries with close relations to Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, so it is essentially considered a Narcos spinoff despite the story completely focusing on her character throughout. Griselda was created by Narcos creators Carlo Bernard and Doug Miro, as well as Eric Newman and Ingrid Escajeda.
The six-part series is directed by Andrés Baiz, who directed 12 episodes of Narcos. The character of Griselda Blanco was nearly included in the original Narcos series, but she was ultimately left out of the picture at that time.
There are clear overlaps in style and themes between Griselda and Narcos, but the series makes sure to not lose sight of The Black Widow's true story despite Escobar's real-life proximity. The series opens with an actual quote from Escobar, saying “The only man I was ever afraid of was a woman named Griselda Blanco.”
Other than the initial quote, there is no other connection made in the series between Griselda and Escobar. Griselda has a much more acute focus on its protagonist, whereas Narcos becomes more focused on the politics and supporting characters.

Compared to Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, Griselda has also received critical acclaim and currently has 86% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a pretty great score to debut with and will likely help increase the series' popularity on Netflix over the coming days and weeks.
The critical acclaim also aligns with Narcos and Narcos: Mexico, which have Rotten Tomatoes scores of 89% and 90%, respectively. Fans of Narcos will certainly enjoy Griselda for its similar tone, degree of violence, and overlapping themes, but will ultimately realize that it's quite different from the Escobar-focused series.
