"Austin Butler's Elvis Legacy: Tracking the Accent in Masters of the Air - Any Changes?"

 Summary

  • Austin Butler's portrayal of Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven in Masters of the Air still carries hints of his iconic Elvis accent.
  • Butler faced backlash for his persistent use of the accent, which he spent two years perfecting for his role as Elvis in Baz Luhrmann's film.
  • Masters of the Air could potentially compensate for Butler's lack of war scenes in the 2022 Elvis movie, offering the actor another chance to showcase his talents in this highly anticipated WWII miniseries.

The new trailer for Apple's Original miniseries Masters of the Air reveals the first appearance of Austin Butler as Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven. The highly anticipated miniseries will be the third collaborative effort from executive producers Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks who oversaw two of the greatest WWII miniseries ever made, The Pacific (2010) and Band of Brothers (2001). The long-awaited series was originally announced to be developed by HBO as far back as 2013 but was acquired by Apple after a series of reported delays and financing complications.

The Apple miniseries is based on the 2006 book Masters of the Air: How The Bomber Boys Broke Down the Nazi War Machine by Donald L. Miller. Butler will star alongside hundreds of actors, including Callum Turner (Fantastic Beasts), James Murray (The Crown), David Shields (Black Mirror), and Academy Award nominee Barry Keoghan (The Killing of a Sacred Deer). Butler,

who is best known for his authentic portrayal of music icon Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, has received backlash over the peculiar and persistent use of the accent he developed for his lifelike performance as the "King of Rock and Roll".

Austin Butler Still Has A Slight Elvis Accent In Masters Of The Air

Based on the new Masters of the Air trailer alone, it appears that the iconic Elvis accent that Bulter crafted for Bax Luhrman's film can still be heard in his portrayal of Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven. The somewhat notorious accent followed Butler throughout the Elvis press circuit and beyond, becoming an internet talking point after his acceptance speech for Best Actor at the 2023 Golden Globes.

Many viewers went online to point out that despite being from Anaheim, California, Butler continued to speak similarly to Elvis with an uncharacteristic southern drawl. The latest WWII drama from the creators of Band of Brothers, Masters of the Air, has plenty of reasons for viewers to get excited for its release.

Butler has since addressed these criticisms after the height of his 2023 Golden Globe win, telling multiple news outlets that it had been a challenge to get rid of the accent which he dedicated two years to perfecting.

The Masters of the Air trailer suggests that Butler has been successful at separating himself from the accent and the Elvis character altogether. The slight Mississippi drawl can still be heard in his glimpses of his character's voice, which conveniently aligns with the real-life origins of Major Gale 'Buck' Cleven being from South Dakota and Texas.

Masters Of The Air Secretly Pays Off Austin Butler's Lack Of War Scenes In Elvis

The actual Elvis Presley joined the military in 1958 and was eventually discharged from the U.S. Army in 1964. Although this was a significant part of his life and career, the 2022 movie essentially glosses over that chapter other than his first encounter with his eventual wife, Priscilla.

In this way, Masters of the Air can make up for those lost scenes in the 2022 film by still projecting Butler's magnificent portrayal of Elvis. Butler's lingering Southern accent could turn out to benefit the young actor even further, as Masters of the Air is expected to be another exceptional WWII miniseries from Spielberg and Hanks.
