It's no secret that Austin Butler loves Carhartt. He's a big fan of the brand's cargo pants, hoodies, and of course, its very famous Detroit Jacket. That's not mindless gushing, either: it's one of the few menswear pieces that is universally cool.
“As they get worn in, they just feel better and better,” Butler said in a 2022 interview with GQ. But, earlier this week, the actor was seen in another kind of Carhartt jacket, one that you probably won't find anywhere else.
Spotted on the streets of New York City with Kaia Gerber (who also can't get enough of Carhartt, btw), Butler went for a black baseball cap, some slightly-oversized trousers, and a pair of chunky Derby shoes. He also had a white T-shirt on, and layered on top of this was the perennial grail: the Carhartt jacket.
At first glance, this looks like just another Detroit Jacket. Which is fine! But if you're a fan of workwear, you'll realise that the shape is slightly more structured, the side pockets come in at a different angle, and the zip that's usually on the left chest is nowhere to be seen.

That's because this is actually the Traditional Jacket. If you've never heard of it, this style was introduced back in the ‘80s, when workwear was actually made for proper work. It was originally released exclusively in brown and this remained the case until around 1998, which is when Carhartt decided to drop the black as well – the very piece Butler's repping (and which we're buying, stat).
This colourway was a lot rarer, and right before mass production, the entire line was discontinued in the early 2000s. That made a grail of the Traditional Jacket. And, with just a few pieces left out there, it's what makes Butler's Carhartt entry one for the books.
