Netflix's High-Stakes Gamble Pays Off: Stellar Action in 2023's Most Expensive Film

The first reactions are in for Netflix’s biggest – and most expensive – movie of 2023 as the streaming platform teams up with major Hollywood director Zack Snyder.

Following on from his headline-grabbing work for Warner Bros and the DC movie franchise, including Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League, filmmaker Snyder is launching his ambitious space opera franchise, Rebel Moon.

Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire is set to hit cinemas on December 15 before arriving on Netflix just a week later.

While social media reviews have lavished praise on its ‘awesome’ visuals and ambitious action, some critics have also found issues with its plotting and similarity to other sci-fi epics – namely Star Wars.

A movie years in the making for (and mind of) Snyder, it stars Sofia Boutella, Ed Skrein, Djimon Hounsou, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Ray Fisher and Corey Stoll, with cameos from the likes of Cary Elwes and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Produced on a reported budget of $150million, which would make it one of Netflix’s biggest projects ever, there is already a second part to Rebel Moon lined up, with second instalment The Scargiver already linked to on the streaming platform with an April 19, 2024 release date.

‘Okay #RebelMoon is quite simply epic! Massive scale, beautiful visuals (of course), awesome action, and some really fascinating mythology,’ praised GamesRadar’s Molly Edwards.

‘There’s lots of exciting set-up for what’s to come, but it’s still very satisfying as its own movie. Jimmy has also stolen my heart.’

Get Your Comic On’s James Lister added: ‘I’ve seen #RebelMoon and it is a visually awesome and epically ambitious ride. While not perfect, this first part will definitely leave you wanting more. Bring on PART TWO!’

While Sunny Ramgolam, critic for Live For Films, felt Rebel Moon ‘took a while to find its groove’, he was still won over by the film overall.

‘It excels in action as Snyder knows best and by the end I was on-board. I’m excited for a part 2 and without all the baggage and expectation of the Star Wars series,’ he shared on X (formerly known as Twitter).
